To buff out uneven ice we used irons, a trick we learned from the local snow statue experts. Notice the rainbows in between the wires. They were formed from the sun coming through the ice crystals. We think the irons look like defibrillation paddles.

Our goal is to mist the Nova into a sheet of white ice. Tonight we worked under a full lunar eclipse. We had hoped to make some photographs but the galactic event was hidden under clouds.

Wildlife/Forestry Contribution

Sid Holman worked in an iron mine in Negaunee until it closed in 1971. He still meets with his fellow miners once every two months for a group breakfast.

The recent donation of ice has given the project a new identity. The look of a geological formation continues to address culture and nature in terms of mining natural resources and technology's impact on the environment.

Last evening we addressed the City Council members to inform them of our project. We thanked them for their generous donation & explained how their contribution was a defining pivotal experience adding a deeper layer of meaning to the Frozen Car. The city of Houghton is immersed in mining culture. Adding harvested ice has brought this cultural element into the piece. Scott MacInnes is on the far left and Mayor Eric Peterson, the far right.

We were introduced to Stanley Dyl, Director of Advancement and Planning at MTU's Mineral Museum, who answered our questions thoroughly. He seemed to understand the new concept for the project in terms of the connections between minerals and industry. He told us the car was comprised almost completely of mined minerals. Copper for the wiring, iron ore for the steel, cadmium for the paint, chromium for the bumpers. He pointed us to the Iziko South African Museum for an illustration. We met Bob Pizzi. He was in town from San Francisco doing research for an oral history project on copper miners. His grandfather was a miner and he told us about a Woody Guthrie song about Calumet miners. The area is rich in mining history and he brought us information about MTU's Mineral Museum. The Museum is literally around the corner from the Frozen Car site. Bob took us out for the local delicacy "Pasty." On the way to lunch Mary discovered a wheel snowflake. At this point mineral formations and our project began to fuse in our imaginations.

After lunch Bob dropped us off at the Museum. A slab of native copper sheet is at the right. It comes from the White Pine Mine in Michigan.

Mark Zenner, Director of Public Works for Houghton, delivered harvested ice to the site again. He and Scott MacInnes loaded some of it into the tank to bring up the levels. We almost hated burying the ice, as it was so beautiful. This led us to consider how we might use the ice differently.

Overnight Misting Results

The night before last we tried an experiment to see what results we'd get from setting the mister on top of the car overnight. We were thinking the ice would travel down the sides and fill out the tank after a few nights but we are now debating the aesthetics.

Since the car is primer black and steel, heat conducts itself differently by day and night.

Physics Professor Will Cantrell gave us some "ice advice" from a molecular point of view yesterday. The most important thing to keep in mind is heat transfer, he said. Dissipating the water, cooling it before freezing it would help immensely. We were led to him by a student who passed by the site the other night & suggested we contact him.

We walked to Jim’s for groceries and to ponder a solution. We didn’t quite know what to do in the face of our problem. The image of the Frozen Car we carried in our minds was beginning to melt!

Reversing our sleeping schedules to comply with Nature … we started to build up a solid crust during the coldest hours & allow puddles to freeze as they spread. It is a delicate matter balancing the spray/freeze ratio.

20 minutes of spray & 30 minutes of freeze. Eventually this should give us the thick platform for pouring we are seeking. We wish we knew when “eventually” was & are definitely at the mercy of Nature and the Unknown at this point.

At 7:30 this morning Andy Niemi arrived with his crew to place the Nova perfectly in its freezing chamber. In just a few minutes the crew had the Nova mounted & hoisted into the box. It was perfectly choreographed by Andy and it happened without a single glitch.

University photographer Joe Pyykkonen stopped by the site today & offered some pointers on slush patching. We tried his combo method of misting and slushing to further prepare the base for tomorrows positioning event. The Nova is slated to be lowered in the middle of the box appx 7:30 AM Feb 1st. The bucket was loaned to us by the MUB cafeteria. The lady who gave it to us said "Hope you don't mind your sculpture smelling like pickles."

This afternoon we went out twice, very briefly, to take advantage of the weather conditions. We made some progress and the Nova might be lifted into position tomorrow, no later than Friday. We tried to take pictures at the site but the camera batteries were frozen.

If Michigan Tech closes the University it means weather conditions are severe. However, Buster, a grounds technician, stopped by to advise us to strike while the iron is hot (cold.) His daily tasks include snow removal & he's gained special insight on how ice behaves. Today our biggest problem is seeking shelter from the blizzard as the Library is closed due to the weather.

Returning for the night. The next few days are dedicated to dealing with water issues. There is about 1-1/2 to 2 feet of frozen slush in the tank. Building up a thicker crust of ice is necessary before we are ready to lower the NoVA into the tank. We are hoping this will make it look as though it is suspended in the ice.

We packed another few inches of snow into the base of the form & are waiting for the freezing rain due this evening. Our hope is that it solidifies by the morning. Then the plan is to use a splitter on the hose w/ two spray attachments. Both of us working at the same time should build up the layers evenly. With the falling temperatures predicted we figure laying down an inch every hour should build enough ice to support the Nova & hopefully it can be lowered into place before the weekend.

Although the weather today is pleasant it created a new set of questions for us. Should we continue filling the tank with water and risk an uneven freeze? Or should we wait & see what the weather does tomorrow? The forecast predicts showers and 40 degrees.

Vinny Morin stopped by on his way to work. He was with his father who has experience building ice rinks. This was fortuitous! He suggested packing down about 4 inches of snow and spraying water on it, allowing it to freeze overnight and returning in the morning to pack more snow. This will build up a sound base and once that's accomplished the water will find its own level and we can begin freezing layers of solid ice from that point.

Vinny helped us shovel in the snow and pack it down. With the temperature fluctuations and the prediction of rain, the weather may work in our favor (providing we are careful with our timing and snow to water ratios.)

Our plan is to build layers of ice over the course of the day. This morning we went out to find that although the ice is freezing- air pockets are occurring. We smashed down the ice before putting in more water.

We thought spraying the water over the 2x4 braces would help avoid making holes in the ice. A garden spray nozzle might be the ticket. Also a tarp over the top to keep out debris.

They worked several hours, from the afternoon into the evening, taking care not to do unnecessary damage the Nova.

Tank Construction

Little did we know that the guys from Hancock High School had been busy all morning building the bottom half of the tank. We were surprised by the leap in progress but also impressed by their speed. They had purchased the material and constructed the tank in less than 24 hours.

The tank is being filled with slush to adhere to the foundation which was laid previously.

Here is a view of what is no longer the site for the Frozen Car. It turned out that the area had a lot of foot traffic and could potentially create a host of problems for pedestrians if we worked on the project there ....

Mark Koski's team relocating the frame to the new site which is under the curved set of windows of the library .. Relocating also meant our webcam will have to be repositioned. A difficult but not impossible task since it is hard wired & finding an appropriate site will not be easy.

When Andy Niemi, MTU's facilities engineer/grounds supervisor came to the site we introduced him to Mark. Mark laughed and said "We're related!" It turns our their grandmothers are sisters ...

Jeni Jewell visited us today to capture more of the action. She's a reporter for WLUCTV6 out of Marquette & covering the story for the local news.

After disconnecting the hose we went to warm up & get some lunch while nature did it's thing with ice. Upon returning we found the spigot frozen. Andy called one of his crew who used a blow torch to open it up. He wanted to know what we were going to do with the car afterwards. It remains a mystery. Stay tuned . . .

Frame Details ...

The frame is 19 x 9 feet and the height of the sculpture will be 9 feet.
With the car and the ice it will probably weigh over 2 tons.

The frame is bring prepped for dismantling and reassembly at the final site. Tomorrow morning we will meet Mark Koski and his team to lay out the frame and fill it up with the first layer of water.

Derrick Gossen and Phi Kappa Tau

Last night we accepted an invitation to join Phi Kappa Tau's Gamma Alpha Chapter in Hancock for a Sloppy Joe dinner. We were introduced to Derrick Gossen, a super senior in Mechanical Engineering. We had prior knowledge of Derrick from Todd Brassard's film about the 2007 Winter Carnival. Derrick has become the fraternity's ice, slush and snow expert over the past few years. He brainstormed with us about potential problems we may face with the project.

Houghton vs. Detroit Temp

We are keeping track of the temperature & comparing the difference between Houghton and Detroit as the project was originally intended to be sited there.

When we worked with students from the ME Department at UMich they researched the temp and found it didn't get cold enough in Detroit to maintain a large block of ice for the length of time needed to stay frozen. The Frozen Car received ultra support when MTU's PR Director Jennifer Donovan (right) made arrangements with various university officials like Gloria Melton (left), the Dean of Students.
It is interesting to note that while Mary was negotiating the project with John Aho, Jennifer had seen an article about Sue's work published in the Frederick News Post (Maryland.) The article briefly mentioned her collaboration with Mary and their intention to bring the Frozen Car to MTU. Jennifer immediately contacted Mary based on what she'd read in the article and enthusiastically offered her support. From that point the project was legitimized and rapidly moved forward.

We have said goodbye to our faithful friend Susan O'Brien, Ceramics Professor at University of Wisconsin- Eau Claire. She helped us settle into our apartment, as we are without functioning wheels.
